Dance of the Tiger

This dance dedicated to the mountain jaguar (erroneously called tiger) god of lands and caves used to be practiced as a ceremony for agriculture. Now it is a lengthy representation in which the 'tiger', or wild beast, is hunted and captured with a dog and other masked dancers. After many skirmishes the marauder is killed, the fear is finally overcome and wild dancing ensues. Similar dramas are enacted in Puebla, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas.
