Santiago Rojas was born in Paucartambo, Cusco, Peru in 1918. Since age 16 he became interested in the dances in his native town that take place every year to celebrate the "Virgen del Carmen" (Virgin Carmen}. At that time it was custom for each dancer to make their own mask. Soon Santiago Rojas became known for his abilities in making these masks and he became the mask-maker for the village. Afterward he produced not only the masks but also miniature reresentations of the dancers in their costumes. He also ade representations of saints, nativities and other religious figures many of which can be found in the churches of the region.
