Rev. Johnnie Swearingen (1908 - 1993) was a Black preacher who lived on a farm near Brenham, Texas. He sold his paintings from a truck and also set up a roadside stand in front of his house.

This was a man with great talent and with a wonderful eye for composition and color. He started drawing and painting at a young age and through hard work became an accomplished painter. He proclaimed himself to be a "Folk Artist" and we must agree. He achieved great technical skill to express and communicate what he wanted to say. He uniquely described the world in which he lived.
