Huichol Jaguar mask made by Iginio Bautista.
Colored beads on wood. 24 x 20 x 20 cm. Courtesy of Jim Gardner.
The decoration on the jaguar represent various elements
from the Huichol mythology. The large central figure on the back is an
elaborate representation of the peyote, the sacred cactus that occupies a
prominent position in their religion. It is flanked by two dogs (or
wolves) and a snake. Above and also on the sides, in front of the ears, as
well as on the chin, are small representations of deer, which is
worshipped for its magical powers. The blue flower-like figures on the
cheeks of the jaguar are more peyote. We also see scorpions and other
power objects used by the Shaman.
