J. Vara (Mexico) Tree of the Dead, 1999. Painted clay,   60 cm high. Courtesy Larry Sanders.

A full-length skeleton is standing on two large skulls and is surrounded by many smaller ones, all of them with jolly expressions. The large one seems to be hiding a smile by covering the mouth area with the right hand. Purple, pink and orange flowers adorn the group, which is not macabre but rather festive.
